1978 Formula 2 European Championship
With Renault now concentrating on their F1 effort it was left to Brian Hart engine to step-up and challenge BMw. The works March team ran BMW engines for Bruno Giacomelli, Marc Surer and Manfred Winklehock. The ICI Chevron team ran Hart engines for Derek Daly and oher 'star' drivers including Elio De Angelis. Of the other teams Brian Henton used Hart engines in his March 782, Fred Opert Chevron B42s used Hart engines for Keke Rosberg and Eje Elgh, Ron Dennis's Project Four team ran BMW engines for Eddie Cheever and Ingo Hoffman in March 782s and Pierro Necchi used BMW engines in his March 782.
Drivers of the 2nd ICI Chevrons were Jochen Mass, Patrick Tambay, Arturo Merzario, Giancarlo Martini, Jean-Pierre Jaussaud, Elio de Angelis, Harald Ertl, Derek Daly drove at every race.

Bruno Giacomelli won 8 of the 12 races and was the series champion. Marc Surer finished 2nd with no wins but 6 2nd places. Derek Daly finished 3rd winning 3 times. Other wins went to Keke Rosberg and Alex Ribeiro. Quick and always a threat was Brian Henton but he never seemed to be able to pick-up points.


A rare one-off appearance was made at Donnington Park by Kazuyoshi Hoshino in the Heroes Racing Corporation Nova 532 BMW from Japan. For a one-off race the car was competetive. He finished 6th in heat 1 before reitiring in heat 2.
